How to Reach Darjeeling and Sikkim — A Complete Tourist Guide

Darjeeling (West Bengal) and the state of Sikkim (Gangtok and surrounding valleys) are two of the most popular hill destinations in northeastern India. This guide explains practical ways to reach both regions, options for onward travel, permit requirements, recommended routes, and useful travel tips for tourists.

Overview: Main Access Hubs

Almost all travellers use the Siliguri-New Jalpaiguri (NJP) / Bagdogra gateway to access Darjeeling and Sikkim. Siliguri (the city) and New Jalpaiguri (rail junction) are the principal rail and road hubs; Bagdogra is the nearest commercial airport. From these hubs you can take taxis, shared jeeps, buses or the heritage toy train (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway) to the hills.

By Air

Bagdogra Airport (IXB)

Bagdogra is the nearest major airport serving both Darjeeling and Gangtok. Daily flights connect Bagdogra with major cities such as Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Guwahati (seasonal and subject to airline schedules).

  • To Darjeeling: Bagdogra → Siliguri → Darjeeling by taxi or shared jeep (approx. 3–4 hours depending on traffic and road conditions).
  • To Gangtok: Bagdogra → Gangtok by road (approx. 4–5 hours; route is mostly hilly).
  • Tip: Pre-paid taxi counters are available at the airport. Private cabs and shared jeeps depart from Siliguri/Bagdogra area.

Pakyong Airport (PYG)

Pakyong is a small airport near Gangtok that has intermittently operated commercial flights. It is closer to Gangtok but flights are limited and frequently affected by weather. Check current airline schedules before planning to use Pakyong.

By Train

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) / Siliguri Junction

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main long-distance railhead connecting the region to major Indian cities (Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad). There are several overnight and day trains to NJP.

  • From NJP/Siliguri you can hire a private taxi or take shared jeeps / buses to Darjeeling (3–4 hours) or Gangtok (4–5 hours).
  • There are also government and private bus services and voluntary tourist taxis at the stations.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train)

The historic narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) — the toy train — is an iconic way to travel between the plains (Siliguri/Kurseong area) and Darjeeling. Services are seasonal and may be restricted; check current operational status and timings in advance. The toy train is slower but scenic and perfect for enthusiasts.

By Road

From Siliguri / NJP

  • Private taxi: Fastest and most comfortable; recommended if you have luggage. Book in advance during peak season.
  • Shared jeeps: Economical and frequent; they leave when full and are popular with backpackers.
  • State buses: Government-run buses connect Siliguri to Darjeeling and Gangtok (including luxury coaches to Gangtok at times).

Long-distance Bus / Road Options

Regular bus and coach services run from Kolkata and other major cities to Siliguri/NJP. From there, continue by taxi or jeep into the hills. Night driving in the hills is not recommended because of narrow roads, hairpin bends and occasional landslides.

Reaching Darjeeling — Practical Options

From Bagdogra / NJP / Siliguri

  • Private taxi: 3–4 hours. Comfortable and door-to-door.
  • Shared jeep: Cheaper but slower; leave once full; expect multiple stops.
  • Toy train: Check for operational status — it’s slower but very scenic.
  • Road conditions: The road climbs steeply with many hairpins; allow extra time in monsoon or winter.

From Kolkata and Other Major Cities

  • Fly to Bagdogra or take an overnight train to NJP; then proceed by road.
  • Direct long-distance buses to Siliguri are a budget option; add the hill transfer time to Darjeeling.

Reaching Gangtok (Sikkim) — Practical Options

From Bagdogra / NJP / Siliguri

  • Private taxi: Most comfortable; takes roughly 4–5 hours depending on traffic and stops.
  • Shared jeeps / SNT buses: Cheaper alternatives — Sikkim Nationalised Transport buses and private shared vehicles connect Siliguri and Gangtok.
  • Pakyong Airport: If flights are available, Pakyong is closest to Gangtok but flights are limited.

Onward to North Sikkim (Lachen / Lachung / Gurudongmar)

Roads to north Sikkim are long and mountain‑challenging. Many visitors join organized tours or hire taxis for the multi-day northern circuit. Permit rules are stricter (see the Permits section).

Permits & Documentation

Documentation: Always carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar card/Indian passport/driving licence) if you are an Indian citizen. Foreign nationals must carry their passport and Indian visa.

  • Foreign nationals: Sikkim is a Protected Area for foreigners and generally requires a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for travel beyond certain points. Permits are usually arranged through registered tour operators or at specified counters — check the latest rules before travel.
  • Indian nationals: No general PAP is needed for most of Sikkim, but special permits are required for restricted/border areas such as Nathula, North Sikkim valleys (Gurudongmar, Chopta Valley) and some high-altitude zones. These permits can be obtained through local agencies or district/tourism offices.
  • Tip: Rules change periodically; always verify permit processes on official Sikkim tourism websites or with local tour operators before departure.

Best Time to Travel

  • October–December: Post-monsoon clear skies, excellent mountain views.
  • March–May: Spring flowers (rhododendrons) and pleasant weather.
  • June–September: Monsoon — heavy rains and higher landslide risk; not ideal for road travel.
  • December–February: Cold and occasionally snowy at higher elevations; some roads or passes may be closed.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Book ahead during peak season: Hotels, taxis and permits can be limited during festivals and holidays.
  • Avoid night driving: Mountain roads are riskier after dark.
  • Pack layers: Weather changes quickly — carry warm clothing, rain protection and sturdy footwear.
  • Health and altitude: Acclimatize gradually if you plan to visit high-altitude areas (North Sikkim or high passes). Carry basic medicines and a small first-aid kit.
  • Connectivity and cash: Mobile and internet coverage varies; ATMs are limited in remote areas—carry sufficient cash.
  • Respect local rules: Sikkim has strict environmental and littering rules; follow guidelines for sustainable travel.

Sample Itineraries (Transit Suggestions)

Short Darjeeling Trip (3 days)

  • Day 1: Arrive Bagdogra / NJP → Transfer to Darjeeling (evening stroll on Mall Road).
  • Day 2: Early sunrise at Tiger Hill (or observatory), Batasia Loop, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, tea garden visit.
  • Day 3: Local sightseeing → Return to Siliguri / NJP.

Classic Sikkim Circuit (5–7 days)

  • Day 1: Arrive Bagdogra / NJP → Transfer to Gangtok.
  • Day 2: Local Gangtok sightseeing (Tashi Viewpoint, MG Road, monasteries).
  • Day 3–4: Excursions to Tsomgo Lake / Nathula (requires permit) or Pelling (for a longer route).
  • Day 5+: North Sikkim (Lachung / Lachen) — requires special permits and an adjusted schedule for altitude acclimatization.

Final Notes

Plan flexibility: Weather or road conditions can change plans quickly in the hills; keep buffer days in your schedule. Use Siliguri / NJP / Bagdogra as your planning hub and decide whether Darjeeling or Gangtok will be your starting base depending on interests (tea-hill culture and heritage in Darjeeling; monasteries, high mountain vistas and alpine lakes in Sikkim).

Useful reminders: Check current transport schedules, permit rules and local travel advisories before departure. If in doubt, contact official tourism offices in West Bengal and Sikkim or a registered local tour operator for up‑to‑date assistance.
