Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, sits at about 1,650–1,700 metres above sea level and is the gateway to Sikkim’s culture, monasteries and Himalayan vistas. This guide explains all practical ways to reach Gangtok — by air, rail and road — and gives tips on permits, local transport and recommended itineraries.
Nearest major transport hubs:
Description: Bagdogra is the main commercial airport serving Sikkim and northern West Bengal. It has frequent flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, Guwahati and other major Indian cities.
To Gangtok: From Bagdogra you can hire a pre-paid taxi, book a private transfer, take a shared jeep or catch an SNT/ITDC bus to Siliguri and onward. The drive to Gangtok usually takes about 4–5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
Description: Located much closer to Gangtok, Pakyong Airport is the shortest air-to-city option. However, commercial operations are limited and subject to change.
To Gangtok: A taxi from Pakyong takes roughly 1–2 hours. Because flight schedules can be intermittent, confirm availability and timings well in advance.
Options: Periodic helicopter or air-taxi services (operated seasonally or on demand) may be available from Bagdogra or Kolkata to Gangtok/Pakyong/Gangtok helipad. These are faster but more expensive and run subject to weather and operator schedules.
Description: NJP is the major railhead for Sikkim with good long-distance train connections (from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati etc.). Siliguri has other stations (Siliguri Town, Siliguri Junction) that also serve travelers.
To Gangtok: From NJP/Siliguri you can hire a private taxi, take a shared jeep, or use a bus. Road journey time is around 4–6 hours depending on vehicle type and road conditions.
Route: The usual route is via NH10 (Siliguri → Rangpo → Gangtok) through the Teesta valley. The road climbs gradually with scenic river and mountain views.
Transport options:
By air: Fly to Bagdogra (fastest). By rail: Overnight trains to NJP then road. By road: Long drive (12–14 hours) via NH27 and NH10; usually broken into stops at Siliguri.
By road: Approximately 10–12 hours depending on traffic and route; routes pass through the hills and plains of northern West Bengal. By rail/air: Consider trains to NJP or flights to Bagdogra for faster travel.
Indian citizens: Usually no entry permit for most of Sikkim; carry government ID (Aadhar, voter ID, passport).
Foreign nationals: Need Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Sikkim — requirements can change, so obtain permits through a registered travel agent or check with authorities at Bagdogra / NJP / Gangtok before travel.
Special-area permits: Visiting places like Nathula, Gurudongmar Lake, North Sikkim, etc., requires additional permits and often police escort; apply through tour operators or at the DC office in Gangtok.
Getting to Gangtok is straightforward: fly into Bagdogra or (if available) Pakyong, or take a train to New Jalpaiguri and complete the journey by road. Choose between private taxis for comfort, shared jeeps for economy, and organized buses for a budget option. Plan permits in advance if you are a foreign national or if you intend to visit restricted high-altitude areas. With a little planning and flexibility for mountain weather, Gangtok makes a rewarding and accessible Himalayan destination.
